GEDs were created during WWII to as a way for patriotic soldiers to fast track their way to join the military and fight for their country. GEDs also allowed veterans returning from war that did not have a H.S. diploma to obtain their diploma. Most veterans went on to college using their GI Bill. The GI Bill has been touted by economist as one of the greatest social equity causes in modern history.
